Of course those really expensive $500 North Face tents are great tents, and worth the price, but when it comes to family tents – and budgets – are they the best top-selling family tents?
Since family camping is usually 3-season camping – Spring, Summer, Fall – it makes sense that camping families are more concerned with space and convenience than they are with being able to shelter from sub-zero temperatures and gale-force winds.
And as good as some of those premium brand tents are, it is good-ol’ dependable Coleman tents that are the most popular and best-selling tents on Amazon – the ‘nets largest and most trusted online marketplace.

Before you can even begin to consider specific tents, you should determine what kind of tent would best suit you, your family, and your camping style.

The Montana 8 tops the list for best-selling family tents – according to Amazon, and according to camper reviews. Of the 168 customer reviews – 135 rated this tent 4 or 5 stars!
The actual customer reviews are even more descriptive. The two most mentioned plus’ were the hinged door, and its ease of set-up.
Coleman has been in the camping gear business a long time, and it shows. Even though their tents are almost always more moderately priced – they also always have the features and durability that camping families are looking for.
And at about $109 – it costs less than half the price of those other premium brands.

#2 – Coleman Red Canyon 8 – Modified Dome Tent
Like the Montana, (above), the Red Canyon uses Coleman’s exclusive Weathertec System of materials and construction to keep everyone high-and-dry in even the worst downpours. Also like the Montana, it incorporates all of the “nice” features that make Coleman tents such a popular choice with camping families.
And as you can see from the customer ratings – even more campers gave this tent a 4 or 5-star rating.
The modified-dome design of the Red Canyon makes this family tent much more stable in winds and deluges. Designed to accommodate 8 sleeping campers, at 17 x 10 feet, it is, (like most tent capacity ratings), a much better fit for a family of 5 or 6 campers. The Wenzel Klondike is a spacious 16-by-11-foot family modified-dome tent that is especially well-suited for hot weather. A full-mesh roof under the rain-fly, and mesh cool-air lower vents ensure the best possible air circulation.
Like the Coleman’s, almost all camper ratings were 4 or 5-star.
The Klondike’s “big room” design is great for casual camping families, but the block-wall profile may not be the best choice for more extreme camping conditions.
